The Malaysia Year-End Sale introduced by the Tourism Ministry to boost the country's tourism industry and economy will be continued in the coming years.
Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the programme was part of the government's initiative to make Malaysia a major international shopping destination.
"Realising the success of the nationwide mega sale carnivals previously which had boosted our retail trade and tourism industry, the government wants the Malaysia Year-End Sale to continue in the coming years," she said when launching the "Magnifique Christmas" programme at Sunway Pyramid in Bandar Sunway, near here, Monday.
Dr Ng said tourists should realise that "shopping in Malaysia is worth it because of the reasonable prices of goods compared to other places as many are duty-free".
In conjunction with Sunway Pyramid's Christmas-themed year-end sale this time, shoppers who spend at least RM250 (RM200 for American Express cardholders) in two receipts (maximum) can redeem two complimentary Sunway Lagoon Nite Park tickets.
The Malaysia Year-End Sale from Nov 23, 2009 to Jan 3, 2010 nationwide sees several shopping complexes like Pavilion, Suria KLCC and Mid Valley Mega Mall having special themes to attract shoppers.

AirAsia’s sale proves to be a hit

AirAsia’s website registered 300 million hits in the first 11 hours of its Free Seats campaign, its regional commercial head Kathleen Tan said.
She also noted that at least 300,000 seats were sold in less than 24 hours.
In a statement yesterday, she said AirAsia’s server capacity had been doubled to cope with the congestion on http://www.airasia.com/.
“The rush for the free seats is a real testament that today’s consumers are online savvy and embracing the low-cost revolution happening in Asia.”
To those who had not succeeded in making their bookings, she urged them to keep trying for the remaining 700,000 free seats.
The campaign ends on Nov 15.

Malaysia a big Asian region winner at World Travel Awards

Malaysia swept seven Asian awards at the prestigious World Travel Awards 2009’s regional finals here on Saturday.
Dubbed the “Oscars” of the global tourism industry, the awards are recognised as the highest accolade within the travel industry.
Malaysia Airlines bagged Asia’s Leading Airline award, while Resorts World Genting scooped Asia’s Leading Family Resort and Asia’s Leading Casino Resort titles.
Tourism Malaysia’s “Malaysia: Truly Asia” tagline was also voted Asia’s leading marketing campaign at the star-studded function in Grosvenor House, a JW Marriot Hotel, in London’s Mayfair.

Lonely Planet puts country among best-value places to visit

LONDON: Malaysia is among world’s best-value destinations, according to travel guide firm Lonely Planet.

The British-based company, in its Best In Travel 2010 guide, said Malaysia “is a clever choice for travellers on the lookout for a bargain”.

Thanks to the economic crisis, Iceland and London were also among the top 10 destinations, which included Thailand, South Africa, India, Mexico, Bulgaria, Kenya and Las Vegas,

The annual snapshot book captures “the world’s hottest travel trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the year ahead”, Lonely Planet said yesterday.

The economic collapse in Iceland meant the island was no longer punitively expensive, said the guide, putting the beleaguered country at the top of its best-value list.

Thailand, at number two, remained “perennially good value”, said the book.

Meanwhile, London’s days as a costly destination were now over, Lonely Planet said, thanks to the exchange rate which made it “much more affordable for visitors from abroad”.

The top 10 countries overall for travellers were El Salvador, Germany, Greece, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, New Zealand, Portugal, Suriname and the United States.

The top 10 cities were Abu Dhabi, Charleston (South Carolina), Cork (Ireland), Cuenca (Ecuador), Istanbul, Kyoto (Japan), Lecce (Italy), Sarajevo, Singapore and Vancouver (Canada).

Bali (Indonesia), Goa (India), Koh Kong (Cambodia), Southern Africa and southwest Western Australia featured among the top 10 regions. — AFP

Air Asia has extended its “Low Fare Madness” special promotion until Oct 18.

Malaysia Hotel News: Making it easy to get to the LCCT via KLIA Express

FROM Sept 15, travellers heading to the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) can to choose to take the KLIA Transit train to the terminal.

Passengers can board the KLIA Transit train from KL Sentral, Bandar Tasik Selatan or Putrajaya and Cyberjaya to the Salak Tinggi station where they will be ferried directly to the LCCT on a dedicated air-conditioned shuttle coach.

A porter will also be on hand to help with luggage at the Salak Tinggi station at no extra charge.

ERL CEO Noormah Mohd Noor said the service was not meant to compete with bus services to LCCT but to provide an alternative for passengers.

“It is the right time for us to come up with this service as LCCT passengers are more mature in their selection. There is a demand for better, safer, and more comfortable modes of travel and passengers are willing to pay for that,” she said at the service launch in Salak Tinggi KLIA Transit station recently.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri was also present at the event.

Noormah added that travelling via KLIA Transit also contributed to the reduction of car trips to LCCT, translating into significant savings on carbon emission.

With 73 trips from KL Sentral and LCCT, Noormah said ERL was expecting a 10% increase from its total daily passengers of 7,000.

A one-way ticket from KL Sentral to the LCCT costs RM12.50 (adult) and RM6 (child) while two-way tickets cost RM22 (adult) and RM11 (child). Shuttle bus services are free during the promotion period.

From Bandar Tasik Selatan station to the LCCT, tickets are priced at RM8.30 (adult) and RM4 (child). The shuttle bus service is charged at RM2.50 per person.

From Putrajaya and Cyberjaya station, tickets are priced at RM3 (adult) and RM1.50 (child) while shuttle bus services are also at RM2.50 per person.

In conjunction with the launch, ERL will be giving away 5,000 free tickets for the new service (applicable only from KL Sentral to Salak Tinggi station). The free tickets are valid for travel effective from Oct 1.

Malaysia Hotel News: ATP set to boost Malaysia Truly Asia brand

The Malaysia Truly Asia brand is set to gain priceless global publicity at the Proton Malaysian Tennis Open, which is part of the ATP World Tour 250 series.

The famous catch phrase will be featured on the Hawk-Eye challenge system, which is the electronic line-calling system used when a player challenges a call on court.

Tournament director Nick Freyer said the system, to be used during the Malaysian Open from Saturday to Oct 4, would be officially known as the “Malaysia Truly Asia Review”.

“Every time a player challenges a call on the centre court, the ‘Malaysia Truly Asia Review’ will swing into action around the world, on televisions across the country and in faraway places, and the four giant screens at the stadium.

“We will be able to see what the correct line-call outcome is through the use of high-speed, high-definition video cameras and powerful computer technology

“This is going to be a brilliant fan experience and is the first time this has been done in South-East Asia,” he said yesterday at a joint press conference with Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

Winners of each match on the centre court will also hit signed tennis balls into the stands, giving fans a chance to get their hands on the autographed balls and claim prizes totalling more than RM100,000.

The nine-day tournament at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil has attracted top tennis stars, including world number eight Nikolay Davydenko and ninth-ranked Fernando Verdasco.

Other stars include former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, Robin Soderling (ranked 11th) Fernando Gonzalez (12) and Gael Monfils (13).

Freyer also said former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis and holder of four ATP Tour titles Taylor Dent would be wild card entries in the tournament, together with another “mystery entry”.

Dent, Freyer said, was an inspirational story for Malaysians as he recovered from two major back surgeries and a year in a body cast before recently playing again.

Meanwhile, Dr Ng said tennis fans were in for a treat at the event, given its diversity of players and attractive prizes for fans.

Auto system entry into Malaysia for frequent Singaporean visitors

An automated clearance system, initially introduced for investors coming into Iskandar Malaysia, is now open to all residents from the Island Republic.

Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam said that Singaporeans frequently travelling between both countries could apply for the Malaysian Automated Checkpoint System (MACS), which was introduced five months ago.

Besides Singaporeans, foreign nationals living there can also apply for this sticker which costs RM30 annually.

“We have already prepared about 100,000 stickers for those who are interested in using the MACS,” he said, adding that the authorities were confident that this move would ease the congestion at both the land entry points into the country.

The present entry points are the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine in Bukit Chagar and the Second Link.

“We have received numerous complaints on the long queues that people have to go through on a daily basis especially those who frequent the causeway daily,” he said.
He added that the system was set up in April but many still were not aware of it.

He was speaking during a press conference after handing out Hari Raya cookies to staff working at CIQ on Sept 20.

“If more Singaporeans apply for the system, it will definitely help smoothen the clearance process at the check points,” he said adding that the RM30 was a yearly fee for the sticker.

He also explained that special lanes had been set up for MACS users and with the system, it would take them less than three seconds to get through the immigration checks.

“The system is simple, once applied, a sticker will be attached to the passport of the user which will contain all the information needed to clear the check point.
“The user just has to touch the passport onto a scanner before placing his thumb onto a reader to pass through,” he said.

Mahmood added that fliers and other information relating to the system would also be distributed to the public to ensure that more people were aware of the facility.
Those interested in applying for the sticker can do so at the immigration office at the CIQ in Bukit Chagar.

MASholidays Offers Ramadan Packages To M'sian Destinations

Travellers intending to spend their Ramadan holidays in Malaysia can opt for special packages offered by Malaysia Airlines travel arm, MASholidays.

The all-inclusive fares with MASholidays for three days and two nights or four days and three nights are on sale from July 15 to Sept 15 for travel from Aug 22 to Oct 30, 2009.

According to the airline office here, holidaymakers can opt to spend their Ramadan in Kuala Lumpur from AED2,540, Terengganu (from AED3,213), Kuantan (from AED2,936) and Tioman (from AED3,274).

Tourist Arrivals Increasing Despite H1N1 Pandemic

Tourist arrivals in the country increased by 3.6 per cent in the first seven months of this year from 12.89 million arrivals registered in the same period last year, despite the global Influenza A(H1N1) pandemic and economic downturn.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said there were 13.35 million tourist arrivals from January to July this year.

"The arrival figures are a testament that despite the global H1N1 pandemic, people still can enjoy a holiday and at the same time take precautions to avoid being infected," she said in her speech at the launching of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Fair, here, Friday.

Her speech was read out by Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Mirza Mohammad Taiyab.

Dr Ng said: "Even though the current situation discourages people from being in any crowded area, there are still places we can go to release stress from our hectic daily life.

"The influenza pandemic should not be the reason to halt all travelling, especially for those who are healthy and not among the high-risk groups," she said.

Dr Ng hoped the Matta Fair would continue to play an important role in stimulating more domestic travel and promoting the Cuti-Cuti Malaysia travel packages.

"This is very important as it is in line with the goverment's objective of promoting more domestic travel. From past experience, we have found that it is the domestic travellers who have really helped to sustain our tourism industry, especially in times of crises," she said.

Dr Ng also urged travel operators to look at the possibility of promoting the homestay programme in every state, and the government had been very committed in this area, with a special fund having been allocated for the upgrading of facilities at these homes.

The five-day Matta Fair which kicked off today, showcases 830 booths of 170 exhibitors comprising airlines, hotels, resorts, tour operators, travel agencies and other tourism-related companies at the Putra World Trade Centre here.

Global sleep study shows that more than half of the Asian respondents felt that a great night's sleep trumped great sex.

KUALA LUMPUR - A good night's sleep is much better than great sex.

This was among the results of a global sleep study of more than 12,500 frequent travellers conducted by Westin Hotels.

The study was a follow-up to a sleep study the hotel chain conducted a decade ago.

The results showed that more than half of the Asian respondents (52 per cent) felt that a great night's sleep trumped great sex.

A great leap compared with just 31 per cent who chose sleep over sex 10 years ago

But preferring a sleeping pill to a chocolate?

That is exactly what the survey found with 53 per cent saying they'd rather have a sleeping pill on their hotel pillow than the ubiquitous chocolate, while 56 per cent took a relaxant, sleep or stress medication when travelling overnight.

One in every two respondents felt a good night's sleep was very important with more than half (58 per cent) believing that today's technology and constant connectivity impairs sleep.

They also believe that the Blackberry makes dreadful sleep companions and 60 per cent said PDAs prevented them from getting a shut eye.

The biggest worry that was keeping them up at night were things like bills or mortgage payments (21 per cent), problems with their spouse or partner (20 per cent) and work related stress (18 per cent).

For male travellers in Asia, the main sleep prevention culprit was problems with their spouse or partner (20 per cent) while for females it was bills and mortgage (28 per cent).

In Canada and China, the biggest worry was problems with the spouse.

More than half of those surveyed (55 per cent) found that a great hotel bed provides a better sleep experience than their beds at home and 50 per cent agreed that sleeping in a hotel bed while on a business trip was a "luxury". This represents a change from 10 years ago, when 82 per cent of travellers found something to complain about hotel beds.

The survey also found that the most important service people expect from a hotel is a good night's sleep (23 per cent), followed by a good restaurant and shower (16 per cent each).

A bad night's sleep has serious repercussions with more than half surveyed saying that a bad night's sleep hurt their business performance.

Most people surveyed said they had got into fights with their boss or co-workers because of a bad night's sleep (30 per cent), more than one in four screwed up a presentation (26 per cent), while 22 per cent argued with their spouse or partner or forgot important events.

Males were most likely to get into a fight with their boss or co-workers (31 per cent), while females were most likely to screw up a presentation (30 per cent).

Twelve countries were surveyed. They were Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

The month-long survey, which ended on July 15, featured 33 questions.

New Low Cost Carrier, Silverfly To Fly Ipoh-Medan Route

Another new low cost carrier, Silverfly Sdn Bhd with the cooperation of Riau Airlines is expected to make its maiden flight serving the Ipoh-Medan-Ipoh route beginning this September 9.

Datuk Bandar of Ipoh, Datuk Roshidi Hashim in announcing this, said that the air service was a proactive move taken by the state government to bring about benefits and facilities to the people in the state.

"The Silverfly air services will certainly bring a lot of benefits for the people as it involves three flights weekly, namely Monday, Friday and Sunday," he told reporters after officiating the MATTA Perak Travel Fair 2009 here Friday.

He earlier witnessed the signing of a joint flight service agreement between Silverfly and Riau Airlines.

Roshidi said the the flights will also activate the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport here and promote tourism activities between the two countries.

Meanwhile the Regional Manager of Silverfly Sdn Bhd, Eddy Azuan Sidik, said that the flights will cost RM369 for a two-way trip and RM259 for one way travel.

The airline will be using the Fokker-50 which has a 48-passenger capacity, while the flight from Ipoh to Medan has been scheduled at 12.30 pm.

Through aggressive promotion, Ramadan bazaars might just become another tourist product for local and foreign tourists, Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib said Saturday.

With the right move, Malaysia could attract more tourists from Muslim countries in the Middle East and Africa to experience Ramadan festivities here, he said at the launch of a Ramadan bazaar here.

His speech was read out by the ministry's deputy secretary-general, Datuk Ab Ghaffar A. Tambi.

Meanwhile, the ministry, with the cooperation of Petronas and Maggi, today prepared and distributed 100 cauldrons of 'Kampung Baru bubur lambuk' to the public.

Meanwhile, City Hall director-general Datuk Salleh Yusup said they had approved 6,700 Ramadan bazaar sites at 11 parliamentary constituencies in the Federal Territory.

He said City Hall charged traders a monthly fee of between RM14.25 to RM130 while those selling at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Masjid India were charged between RM170 to RM785 per lot.

U.S. President Barack Obama has welcomed the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan in a video address posted on the White House website.

Mr. Obama begins the video greeting with wishes for a blessed month for Muslims worldwide. "On behalf of the American people, including Muslim communities in all 50 states, I want to extend best wishes to Muslims in American and around the world. Ramadan Kareem," he said.

In the nearly five minute message, Mr. Obama mentions U.S. initiatives to isolate violent extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and to support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"All of these efforts are a part of America's commitment to engage Muslims and Muslim-majority nations on the basis of mutual interest and mutual respect. And at this time of renewal, I want to reiterate my commitment to a new beginning between America and Muslims around the world," he said.

Mr. Obama's Ramadan message is intended to build on the goodwill generated by his June speech in Cairo to the Muslim world. He says U.S. embassies around the world have reached out to people in Muslim-majority countries in the past two months, to learn how America can find common ground with them. "We have listened. We have heard you. More Asean countries need to provide low-cost carrier terminals and reduce other costs to enable budget airlines to thrive.

AirAsia Group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandez said regional air travel showed great growth potential.

He said only Malaysia and Indonesia now offered low-cost carrier terminals in a region which has a population of 600 million.

Shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur are in the dark on what to do for the Merdeka Day celebrations this year as they have yet to receive any guidelines from the Information, Communica-tions and Culture Ministry.

The only information they have so far is to scale down the celebrations at shopping centres in view of the fasting month which coincides with National Day on Aug 31.

Yet most of the shopping mall owners say they have yet to receive any guidelines as to what they can and cannot do for the National Day celebrations.

When StarMetro spoke to representatives from several malls recently to find out their activities for Merdeka, many were still unsure how they would go about the celebrations.

They said it would be difficult for them to decide what to do without clear guidelines from the ministry.

“Without clear guidelines or feedback, we cannot proceed with our programmes,” Sungei Wang promotions and public relations senior manager K.K. Lim said.

Lim said Sungei Wang would not be holding its Merdeka Countdown Concert this year, an annual affair at the mall.

“Since we are not sure what we can do, we cannot book artistes to perform because if there happens to be a directive at the last minute saying that we cannot have a concert, then we will lose our deposit,” he said.

Lim, however, reiterated that since it was the fasting month, Sungei Wang would tone down its celebrations.

Pavilion KL marketing general manager Kuan Suan Ai said they had come up with a community-themed Merdeka programme minus a concert.

“There has been no communication with the ministry so we are going to have a moderate celebration with an emphasis on community,” Kuan said.

“It will help if there are clear guidelines which will give us a better perspective of what we can and cannot do,” she added.

A spokesman from Genting also confirmed that there would be no concert for this year’s celebrations but the City of Entertainment would be having fireworks instead.

Berjaya Times Square spokesman said they were still finalising the Merdeka events but acknowledged that they had not received any feedback from the ministry yet.

A Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) spokesman also confirmed that no information has been forthcoming from the ministry.

When contacted, an official from the ministry confirmed that nothing has been decided as they had yet to hold a meeting to discuss the matter.

It was recently reported that this year’s Merdeka Day celebrations will be held at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

This would be the first time the celebration will be held there.

Traditionally, Merdeka celebrations are held at Dataran Merdeka with a parade but Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim was quoted as saying that there would not be any parades and float processions this year and that the logistics at the National Stadium were conducive for the scaled-down celebration as it was the fasting month.

Internet users upset over Govt’s filter attempt

PETALING JAYA: Online and wire agency reports that the Government is mulling an Internet filtering system similar to China’s controversial “Green Dam” project has got the local online community in a huff, while technology experts questioned the viability of the project.

Online portals and wire agencies reported earlier Thursday that the Government has called for a tender for a system that could block “undesirable websites.”

Information, Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim, whose ministry issued the tender, also plans to secure direct control over the content and monitoring division of Malaysia’s Internet regulator, Reuters quoted a source as saying.

Rais himself said last month that he would introduce measures to “control the bad” elements on the Internet.

Neither Rais, nor any of the government bodies related to technology, were available for comment at press time.

China’s Green Dam project sought to install software filters on all computers sold in the country to block pornography and “other harmful content,” but has been put on the backburner because of technical issues and a rising tide of protest from civil society in and outside China.

The Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (Pikom) was disappointed with what it said was the Malaysian Government’s attempt to censor the Internet.

“It has gone against its word to ensure the medium remains open and uncensored,” Pikom chairman David Wong said.

The MSC Malaysia Bill of Guarantees specifies that the Internet will not be censored to ensure the success of the MSC Malaysia initiative, he noted.

“It will also be difficult to filter ‘harmful content,’ especially that found in blogs, on the Internet as it knows no boundaries,” he said.

Wong said Internet users did not share their thoughts only on blogs, but also through social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, as well as chatrooms and forums.

He said a better and more viable measure would be to educate the public on the consquences of spreading harmful or irresponsible content.

Technology advocate Dinesh Nair said the Government’s efforts might just be in vain.

“They can try to filter the Internet but it won’t work,” he said.

He also believed that if the main reason was to block “undesirable content,” the Government would be better off using the educational approach.

If the Government were to block one “harmful site,” another would just pop up in its place, he added.

Internet users, he said, view online censorship as damaging and will always find ways to circumvent any such barrier.

“It’s better to educate the rakyat (people) to be proactive and identify these sites and exercise good Internet surfing habits, rather than censoring the Internet,” he said.

Artist and new media advocate Muid Latif said Internet censorship would only contribute to the negative growth of the Malaysian information and communications technology sector, especially in the area of creative content.

“This ridiculous restriction will reflect badly on Malaysia and potential investors will think twice about making an investment here,” he said.

Many in the Government have blamed the vibrant and critical Internet culture for Barisan Nasional’s losses in the 12th General Election in March last year, and there has been pressure from some quarters to muzzle the medium.

The Government had previously considered registering bloggers, many of whom are critical of the ruling coalition.

As international traveller numbers drop around the globe, Malaysia is bucking the trend reporting an increase of 3.5% in the number of international travellers arriving in the country in the first half of the year.
11.3 million international visitors stepped past the country’s borders this January to June period, a 3.5% increase when compared to the same six months in 2008. ?June alone saw a 7.5% jump in international travellers to 2.1 million travellers.
“The top ten tourist generating markets for June 2009 were Singapore (1,222,096), Indonesia (215,948), Thailand (107,526), Brunei (107,083), China (including Hong Kong & Macau) (58,351), India (57,603), Australia (39,536), the Philippines (37,701), the United Kingdom (32,962) and Japan (25,924),” said Tourism Malaysia in a statement.
Surprisingly Iranian arrivals were the biggest growth market, jumping some 94.2% in June when compared to June 2008.? Iran was followed by and Canada, with massive 65.5% and 51.7% growth rates respectively.
Slightly closer, New Zealand and Australian arrivals also jumped 33.4% and 24.9% reaching 4,105 and 230,117 in total visitor numbers respectively.
Of its top three countries, Singapore performed incredibly well, jumping 25.1%, but this was counterbalanced by a similar drop of 25.4% from the Thailand market, Indonesia edged up slightly by 3.3%.
Tourism Malaysia notes that the big drops from Asian source markets were likely “due to the global economic crisis, as well as the effect of Influenza A(H1N1)”.

Security at major hotels in Kuala Lumpur

Security at major hotels, nightspots and tourist haunts in the city has been tightened following the terrorist attack on two hotels in Jakarta.

City deputy police chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat, however, said that Kuala Lumpur was safe. He said uniformed policemen as well as undercover personnel were monitoring the situation.

“Several district police chiefs where prestigious hotels are located have met the hotel representatives to advise on additional security measures. We have also increased our patrols at clubbing areas in the city, such as Jalan P. Ramlee, as well as other tourist haunts."

Meanwhile, the New Sunday Times learnt that several major hotels in the Golden Triangle area of the city have taken additional security measures.

“Since the Jakarta bombing incident on July 17, we have taken extra steps to ensure security,” said an industry source. Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur general manager Stephen Cokkinias said there was no cause for concern as Malaysia was a safe country to visit. “The hotel has always taken measures to ensure the safety of their guests and staff .”

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd security and safety adviser Datuk Kamaruddin Mohd Ismail said there were now more visible security measures at key airports.

“In recent meetings, the police’s General Operations Force informed us that they had increased their uniformed personnel too,” said Kamaruddin, when contacted.

He said the GOF now guarded the departure and arrival halls, as well as the areas outside the terminal buildings of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

“We have also increased the number of security officers and are monitoring at the airside areas, which are the restricted areas of the airport,” said Kamaruddin.

Meanwhile, in Johor Baru, state police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said their officers stationed at all entry points, and marine police personnel patrolling the coastline, have been told to be extra careful.

“We will cooperate with both the Customs and Immigration departments to ensure the nation’s security.”

Most airlines, in trying to mitigate the impact of fuel price volatility, have resorted to stringent baggage restrictions as part of measures to achieve better fuel efficiency.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), every 1% improvement in fuel efficiency across the aviation industry can lower fuel costs by US$700mil annually. This is unsurprising since fuel cost is the second-largest cost for airlines after labour.
Passengers on AirAsia flights are encouraged to travel light, like using carry-on luggage, to minimise checked-in baggage. They are allowed to have one carry-on luggage of up to 7kg, plus free 15kg allowance for checked-in baggage.

In comparison, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) allows for hand luggage to have a maximum combined weight of 5kg and free 20kg allowance for checked-in luggage for economy class (see table).

MAS general manager for corporate safety, security, health and environment, Ooi Teong Siew, said reducing weight was one of the static techniques, which include ensuring aircraft are well trimmed and engines cleaned regularly.

Dynamic techniques, meanwhile, are factors that have an impact on the flight path like direct routings, economical speeds, continuous descents and optimum altitudes.

“These efforts, without compromising on safety and quality, have reduced our fuel burnt rate and enabled us to contribute to cost reduction of RM2.3bil from 2006 to 2008,” Ooi said in an e-mail reply to StarBiz.

AirAsia Bhd group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes noted that for every flight hour, an additional 1,000kg of take-off weight would burn up 90kg fuel.

AirAsia also achieved greater fuel efficiency with its new fleet of A320 planes, as they offered higher unit fuel consumption per flight while high dispatch ability and operational efficiency contributed to lower maintenance expenses, Fernandes said.

“We adhere to a quick turnaround of 25 minutes, which leads to high aircraft utilisation, lower costs as well as greater airline and staff productivity. Fuel consumption-wise, the quick turnaround means less time spent by an aircraft idling on the ground, which reduces unnecessary fuel consumption and harmful emissions,” he said.

Such practices kept costs down and ensured minimum aircraft weight, Fernandes said, adding that savings and benefits would translate into low fares for passengers.

Ooi said MAS also minimised the use of auxiliary power unit on ground, ensured faster connection of ground power, chose the best flight profile as well as adopted a continuous descent approach at applicable airports, and regular airframe and engine maintenance.

“Other examples include replacing the heavy unit loading devices with those which are 40kg lighter and using nearer alternate airports.”

MAS is anticipated to achieve greater fuel efficiency when it takes delivery of 35 B738 late next year and the A380 in 2011.

Meanwhile, FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd managing director Eddy Leong said the airline did not practise overzealous efforts in enforcing one hand luggage and checked baggage limits.

“Firefly’s business model was designed to be light from the beginning because we chose a very fuel efficient and modern ATR72-500 aircraft,” he said.

The focus then is on eliminating hassles, enriching the travel experience and optimising costs.

“For example, our full complimentary food and beverage on board includes serving muffins on paper cups and ensuring that we cater exactly to the passenger count. Any extras would be given to passengers. In the end, there is no waste to offload, no wastage to worry about. Our ultimate gain is in the revenue side and loyalty from passengers,” Leong added.

Emirates Airlines, in contrast, increased the free baggage allowance across its network effective May 4, with the exception of countries that apply one-piece concept for checked-in luggage. Economy class travellers are now given 30kg from 20kg previously.

An analyst with a local brokerage said the impact of strict baggage terms was unlikely to have a huge impact on bottomline.

Airlines also tried to carry the correct amount of jetfuel and to power planes by ground power units during waiting periods instead of jetfuel to achieve better fuel efficiency, he said.

IATA, on its website, indicated efforts being taken with air navigation service providers, air traffic controllers, airlines and other key stakeholders to save one minute per flight via better airspace design, procedures and management.

“If successful, this initiative could reduce total industry operating costs by over US$1bil a year and significantly reduce environmental emissions,” the association said, noting that on average, airlines spent US$100 per minute per flight in total operating costs.

Tourism Malaysia is set to capitalise on this year's 35th anniversary of Sino-Malaysian relations as well as the ethnic ties between the peoples of both countries to draw more Chinese tourists to Malaysia.

The Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board has set a target of one million Chinese tourists for this year alone.

"We will launch attractive tour packages which encourage Chinese tour operators to bring newly-wed couples, diplomatic personnel, intellectuals and professionals to Malaysia," Malaysian Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen said at a meeting with Tourism Malaysia officers based in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan Sunday evening soon after arriving here on a five-day visit to promote tourism.

She said tourists coming under these packages would enjoy gifts and additional services on top of the attractive discounts.

"We will include wedding photo shoots, gifts and gala shows for mass wedding couples to make their honeymoon in Malaysia a most memorable one.

"Former Chinese ambassadors to Malaysia will be engaged to give talks and hold seminars in universities here to relate their sweet experience in Malaysia so as to attract fellow diplomatic personnel, intellectuals and professionals to visit Malaysia," she said.

Dr Ng said the Chinese websites of Tourism Malaysia would carry the stories and photographs of rich and successful Chinese Malaysians to arouse the interest of the Chinese here to visit Malaysia to find out more about the evolution of Chinese Malaysians.

She also said that Tourism Malaysia would introduce special packages for Chinese senior citizens and parents of Chinese students overseas to visit Malaysia.

The Tourism Ministry would also emphasise the "To Know Malaysia is to Love Malaysia" promotion to get tourists to revisit Malaysia, she said.

Ng is scheduled to have dialogue sessions with major tour operators in Beijing at the Westin Beijing Chaoyang Hotel Monday morning and a dinner with Beijing Tourism Administration officials in the evening.

She will head for Shanghai Tuesday morning and also visit Wuhan and Guangzhou city before returning to Kuala Lumpur Friday.

At least six people, including several foreigners, have been killed and 10 injured when explosions ripped through two luxury hotels in downtown Jakarta on Friday, police say.
South Jakarta police Colonel Firman Bundi said some of the bodies had been taken to a hospital.
The facade of the Ritz-Carlton was blown off in one blast and another explosion hit the Marriott, police said. The explosions rocked the area about 8am local time (11am AEST).
The head of the Health Ministry crisis centre, Rustam Pakaya, said at least two people were seriously injured, including one New Zealander.
One hospital emergency room said it was already treating 15 people.
Debris and shattered glass littered the street outside the neighbouring hotels, which are in an upscale Jakarta neighbourhood, and ambulances raced to the scene

The Sydney Morning Herald's Indonesia correspondent Tom Allard said one bomb was reportedly detonated inside the Ritz-Carlton.
"I'm looking at it now, you can see all the windows punched out on one side,'' Allard told 2UE radio from outside the back of the hotel.
"[I've been told] the bomb actually went off inside the restaurant at the time people were actually sitting there to have their breakfasts.
He said he could see what appeared to be dead bodies being pulled out of the building and badly injured people being helped out as well.
An Australian man called Jim told 2UE his son was injured in the explosion at the Marriott.
The man said his son phoned him from Jakarta, where he was working, and told him he was on his way to hospital.
His left leg was bleeding and he'd lost hearing in one ear but he told his father he was OK, the man said.
Witness reports
A man jogging by the hotels said he first heard a loud explosion at the Marriott. Five minutes later, a bomb followed at the Ritz.
Alex Asmasubrata said he saw four bodies inside the Marriott. An Associated Press reporter saw three injured people taken away from the Ritz.
Security guard Eko Susanto told AFP: "I heard two sounds like 'boom, boom' coming from the Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton. Then I saw people running out."
Witness Intan told TV One one of the explosions wrecked the lobby of the Plaza Mutiara building.
"I was having breakfast on level 16, I heard an explosion and went down to the first floor and it was a mess. I saw foreigners all bloody, about three to five of them, badly wounded," she said
A witness, who gave her name as Mery, told ElShinta: "I saw some people being carried into a Mercedes. There was a lot of them in there, they were having trouble closing the doors."
Dow Jones Newswires reported witnesses who heard three explosions in the Mega Kuningan business precinct.
"I heard at least three explosions and now white smoke is billowing," a fund manager at a foreign securities company told Dow Jones Newswires on the phone.

Hackers embarrass Twitter yet again

SAN FRANCISCO: Breaking into someone’s e-mail can be child’s play for a determined hacker, as Twitter Inc employees have learned the hard way — one more time.

For the third time this year, the San Francisco-based company was the victim of a security breach stemming from a simple end-run around its defenses.

In the latest case, a hacker got the password for an employee’s personal e-mail account — possibly by guessing or by correctly answering a security question — and worked from there to steal confidential company documents.

The techniques used by the attackers highlight the dangers of a broader trend promoted by Google Inc and others toward storing more data online, instead of on computers under your control.

The shift toward doing more over the Web — a practice known as “cloud computing” — means that mistakes employees make in their private lives can do serious damage to their employers, because a single e-mail account can tie the two worlds together.

Stealing the password for someone’s Gmail account, for example, not only gives the hacker access to that person’s personal e-mail, but also to any other Google applications they might use for work, like those used to create spreadsheets or presentations.

That’s apparently what happened to Twitter, which shares confidential data within the company through the Google Apps package that incorporates e-mail, wordprocessing, spreadsheet, calendar and other Google services for US$50 (RM180) per user per year.

Targeted

Co-founder Biz Stone wrote in a blog posting on Wednesday that the personal e-mail of an unnamed Twitter administrative employee was hacked about a month ago, and through that the attacker got access to the employee’s Google Apps account.

Separately, the wife of co-founder Evan Williams also had her personal e-mail hacked around the same time, Stone wrote. Through that, the attacker got access to Williams’ personal Amazon and PayPal accounts.

Stone said the attacks are “about Twitter being in enough of a spotlight that folks who work here can become targets.”

Some of the material the hacker posted online from the Google Apps documents was more embarrassing than damaging, like floor plans for new office space and a pitch for a TV show about the increasingly popular online messaging service.

Twitter says only one user account was potentially compromised because a screenshot of the account was included among the stolen documents. The value in hijacking a user’s account is limited, as those attacks are mainly used to post fake messages and try to trick the victim’s friends into clicking on links that will infect their computers.

Sensitive Twitter documents were filched, though. The hacker claims to have employee salaries and credit card numbers, resumes from job applicants, internal meeting reports and growth projections.

TechCrunch, a widely read technology blog, said it was e-mailed the documents and subsequently published some of them, including financial projections that Twitter drew up in February.

The forecast envisioned Twitter generating its first revenue in the current quarter, with sales of about US$400,000 (RM1.44mil) and about 60 employees. By the end of next year, Twitter expected to employ about 345 people with annual revenue of about US$140mil (RM504mil), according to the documents published by TechCrunch.

Stone said in an e-mail that most of the documents TechCrunch has access to are “speculative exercises.”

Lawyers called in

In his blog post, Stone said the stolen documents “are not polished or ready for prime time and they’re certainly not revealing some big, secret plan for taking over the world,” but said they are sensitive enough that their public release could jeopardise relationships with Twitter’s partners.

Stone said the company is talking to lawyers about “what this theft means for Twitter, the hacker, and anyone who accepts and subsequently shares or publishes these stolen documents.”

What the attacks on Twitter show is that websites don’t need to get compromised in the traditional sense to put its users and employees at risk.

Hackers don’t need to find a vulnerability in the site itself, or plant a virus on an employee’s computer, to sneak inside.

The easier approach is much more low-tech: All they need to find is an employee who uses weak passwords for his or her e-mail accounts, or has security questions that are easy to answer with a little information about the person.

It’s an old strategy that’s becoming more and more valuable as people’s personal and work lives merge online.

It can be trivial to guess someone’s passwords, as former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin found out during the election, when her personal e-mail was hacked and screenshots were posted online.

That attacker sneaked in by accurately guessing the answer’s to Palin’s security questions, based on information about her and her family that was already online.

Password-guessing programs are also a common hacking tool. An attacker runs the program against an account, and if it’s allowed to try lots of times and the password isn’t very complicated, the hacker’s in.

Not new

Twitter was hit twice before this year in similar incidents.

In an attack against Twitter in January, a Twitter support staffer’s account was compromised using a password-guessing-program.

The hacker got administrative access to the site. The Twitter feeds for Barack Obama, Britney Spears and other celebrities were used to send out bogus messages. A similar attack happened in May.

The attacks on Twitter serve as a reminder of why many corporations are reluctant to jump on the cloud-computing bandwagon. Outsourcing sensitive jobs can save money but also open up companies to more risk because their data isn’t entirely under their control.

Another trend online is for web-based services to streamline access by letting users log into each others’ sites with the same usernames and passwords. Facebook and other services have begun to do this, raising possible security risks.

The lesson from Twitter’s latest security troubles is an old one: Use strong passwords, which include some combination of letters and numbers, and for companies, be careful about how many accounts are linked to the same username and password combination. — AP

More Singaporeans visit Malaysia

TOURIST arrivals from Singapore have risen sharply since the open skies agreement went into force on Jan 1, with new direct flights to various parts of Malaysia.

There were about 4.9 million arrivals from the start of the year until the end of May, 1.3 million or 36 per cent more than the arrivals in the same period last year, Malaysia's Tourism Ministry said. Visitors arriving from Singapore account for almost half of total tourist arrivals.
'Singapore has always been our major market, and that is due to the easy accessibility of Malaysia,' Tourism Malaysia chairman Victor Wee told The Straits Times. 'But the recent competitive airfares, which are very hard to resist, are definitely one of the factors encouraging Singaporeans to visit Malaysia.'

Flights between Singapore and Malaysia were previously monopolised by Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines.

There are currently seven airlines with direct flights to seven cities, including Kuching and Kota Kinabalu in east Malaysia. Other cities served by flights from Singapore are Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh, Langkawi and Kuala Terengganu.
Firefly, which added an Ipoh-Singapore route to its existing KL flight on Sunday, will also start servicing Alor Star in Kedah and Kota Baru in Kelantan from Oct 25. Budget airline AirAsia also said on Monday it would start two new routes, servicing Tawau in Sabah and Miri in Sarawak, starting on Sept 6.

Singaporean Matthew Goh, 35, who travels to Malaysia at least two to three times a year for short weekend getaways, is among those looking forward to a greater choice of destinations. 'I will definitely be going to the more 'out of the way' places since there are now flights to places like Terengganu and Kelantan,' he said.

But analyst Lee Heng Guie of CIMB, Malaysia's second largest financial services provider, believes there is a more complex range of factors behind the increase in visitor arrivals from Singapore than simply cheaper fares and greater choice.

'It could be the global downturn, so people tend to travel within the region instead of long haul,' he said. 'It could also have been triggered by Thailand's political instability when Bangkok closed its airport last year. Now, with the A(H1N1) flu, people likely prefer to travel to less-affected countries.'

State governments are also supporting the services, as more visitors means bigger revenues.

GEORGE TOWN: The public can travel faster between various places on Penang island and Seberang Prai with the introduction of water taxis which is expected to take-off by the end of next year.

Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Tan Cheng Liang said the project was approved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) council meeting recently.

She said the PPC, which mooted the idea, had identified 10 proposed coastal points for the service.

She said the sites on the mainland are Butterworth, Bagan Ajam, Pulau Aman and Nibong Tebal, and Weld Quay, Tanjung Bunga, Teluk Bahang, Tanjung Tokong, Pantai Jerejak and Batu Maung on the island.

Tan said the water taxis will greatly help to reduce travelling time between various places in the state.

“For example, it will take more than two hours for the public to travel from Bagan Ajam in Butterworth to Batu Ferringhi on Penang island as they will have to take a ferry and then a bus.

“But with the water taxis, it will only take them about 30 minutes,” she said at a press conference here yesterday.

Tan said the service would be useful for those staying in Seberang Prai but working in Bayan Lepas factories or Batu Ferringhi hotels.

“It will also ease traffic congestion on the island and be an alternative mode of transport when there are traffic snarls on Penang Bridge.

“The service will provide new job opportunities and spur the tourism industry,” she said.

Tan said the service would be implemented by the Northern Corridor Implementation Agency (NCIA) under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

“The Federal Government has allocated RM50mil for the state water transportation services,” she said.

She said a consultant would be engaged to carry out a study on the project feasibility, the popularity of the routes and geographical impact.

“The consultant will take about three to four months to conduct the study,” she added.

NCIA senior vice-president Christopher Tan Chie Kiong said the final cost of the project could not be determined prior to the study.

“NCIA is expected to appoint a consultant by next month to commission the study but while waiting for it to be completed, we want to identify opportunities for pilot services with the existing infrastructure,” he said.

New taxi fares will be announced on Thursday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Abd Aziz said.

Nazri, however, did not disclose the quantum of the increase for the new fares, which will be adjusted upwards.

In late May Nazri had said the new bus and taxi fares would be presented to the Cabinet for approval.

On the 3,000 taxi permits announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,, Nazri said priority would be given to taxi drivers who had been driving for more than 10 years and with a good track record.

Currently, there are about 9,000 applications for individual permits still pending with the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CLVB) since last October.

“We need to go through the applications first and also listen to the industry players who have been complaining about too many taxi permits being given away,” said Nazri.

He also stressed that taxi permits would be given based on merits and not quota.

“Between creating more entrepreneurs and providing good service to the people, I opt for the latter,” he said, adding that one should not compromise on the standard of taxi service in the country.

“We want the general public to enjoy the best taxi service,” he told reporters after opening the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme Series 2/2009 held at the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) in Bukit Kiara yesterday.

The Tourism Ministry wants more money to promote Malaysia internationally as the lower tourist arrivals are a “very grave concern”, said minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

She had written to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to increase the present budget allocation of RM245mil.

“I have written to the Prime Minister for additional funding with details on where we intend to focus on,” Dr Ng told reporters after meeting 44 Tourism Malaysia overseas directors and desk officers yesterday.

Without revealing the amount requested, Dr Ng said the present budget was not boosted by the latest stimulus package unveiled in March, which only allocated for minor infrastructure development for public amenities.

Dr Ng added that during the meeting, Health Ministry officers gave a full briefing on the status of the influenza A (H1N1) outbreak, to give desk officers a clearer picture of the situation here as many foreign tourists were worried about coming to Malaysia.

“The bottom line is that there is no quarantine; Malaysia is safe.

“If you have a cough or flu without complications, you are not compelled to go to the hospital,” she said.

The new Shenzhen-Kota Kinabalu route by Shenzhen Airlines is expected to bring in more China tourists to Sabah and contribute to achieving the state's target of 1.2 million international tourists this year.

Tourism Malaysia state director Mohd Roslan Abdullah said Sabah had recorded an annual growth in tourist arrivals from China, from 61,567 tourists in 2006 to 77,475 tourist arrivals in 2007 and 87,175 tourist arrivals in 2008.

"This shows that there is a healthy growth in terms of tourist arrivals from that country. With the recent addition of China's carrier Shenzhen Airlines making its way to Sabah, we hope for more tourists from China," he said at the at welcoming dinner after Shenzhen Airlines' inaugural flight to Sabah.

The airline launched the new route last night, with the inaugural flight leaving Shenzhen at 11.50pm with 163 passengers, including invited guests and members of the media, and which arrived here at 2.30am today. A batch of Sabah media members flew out to Shenzhen at 4.30am as part of its familiarisation programme.

Shenzhen Airlines sales department general manager Liu Zhen said it will fly to Kota Kinabalu twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays with a capacity of 164 seats and although it is currently operating chartered flights the airline hoped to operate scheduled flights soon.

"Despite the current economic climate and global health scare, Shenzhen Airlines chose to continue its plan to fly to KK, as we have been working on it for a year in our efforts to enter the market.

"Our aim is to make Shenzhen as a hub, passengers from Malaysia especially from Sabah will fly to other cities in China via Shenzhen, and vice versa those from China will go to Sabah through Shenzhen," he said, adding that Shenzhen also connected to a network of 24 other cities in China.

He added that only this year they introduced flights to Bangkok in April and will start flying to Phnom Penh in September, so Sabah was the second international destination launched so far.

Shenzhen Airlines is already flying to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

At present Malaysia's low cost carrier, AirAsia, is also servicing the Shenzhen-KK route.

Liu said also in the pipeline were plans to introduce four new routes to Japan and other cities in South East Asia.

Shenzhen Airlines is a Shenzhen-based airline founded in November 1992 and started service in September 1993 as an airline specialised in passengers, cargo and mail transportation.

Its total assets at present are worth 20 billion yuan (RM10.45 billion), it has over 15,000 employees, owns over 130 passenger and cargo planes, does over 280 domestic and international flight routes, and is among the five largest airlines in China.

PASSENGERS on Firefly landing at the Subang SkyPark will soon be able to enjoy shuttle bus services into the city and Sepang.

FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd managing director Eddy Leong said following the positive response received from the community airline's bus collaboration with Rapid Penang since May, Firefly is looking at more value-for-money options for its passengers.

"We are in active arrangement with Subang Skypark to introduce shuttle bus services to KL Sentral and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport," he told Business Times.

Leong said Firefly's collaboration with Rapid Penang is based on cross-marketing.
"Passengers buying our tickets are informed on their booking itinerary that they are entitled to this special service and we also make announcements on board. Genting Singapore’s Resorts World at Sentosa (RWS) is in a good position to pull ahead of Las Vegas Sands’ Marina Bay Sands (MBS) in the race to open the first casino in Singapore following a delay in the MBS project, analysts said.
MBS has delayed its soft launch to early 2010 from the original deadline of end-2009 due to a shortage of labour and materials, according to media reports.

HwangDBS Vickers Research, in its latest report, said with RWS on track for a targeted soft launch in January 2010 to catch the Chinese New Year (CNY) peak season, it was possible that RWS would open first.

This is despite RWS having started later, as it was awarded the project in December 2006 while MBS received its approval in May the same year, it noted.

Kenanga Research said in a company update report that RWS was likely to gear up construction works in order to open before MBS.

The research house said that as at March 31, RWS had already awarded about S$4.67bil worth of works out of the S$6.59bil project cost.

“Installation of various fun equipment in Universal Studios has begun while testing and commissioning is scheduled to begin in October,” it noted.

Analysts expect RWS to gain from “first-mover” advantage should it open its integrated resort ahead of MBS, noting that Singapore residents are required by the government to pay an entrance fee of S$100 per day or S$2,000 per year to the casino.

The annual pass is exclusive to one casino only, so the first integrated resort to open will have the advantage of locking in Singaporean patrons early, according to HwangDBS Vickers Research.

An analyst with a foreign brokerage said RWS was very likely to open in early first quarter next year and lock in more local and foreign casino patrons, especially those from China, during the Chinese New Year festive season.

“Whoever opens first will get the first batch of patrons to sign up to be its customer for one year, as seasoned punters will likely sign up for the annual passes,” he told StarBiz.

“Normally, people will get excited with something new but after a while, they will go for what they really want,” he added.

RWS is ready for the opening in the first quarter next year as everything, including construction, is on track while funding for the project is intact, according to the analyst.

“RWS would submit its application for casino licence in this quarter (third quarter).

“Probably it can get the approval before the fourth quarter this year if everything goes smoothly,” he continued.

Another analyst, who declined to be named, agreed that RWS would get first-mover advantage if it opened first, but it would be just an initial gain.

She said RWS had a different target market from MBS, noting that “RWS would attract more family persons with its theme park facilities.”

Resorts World at Sentosa Pte Ltd is the developer of a 49ha integrated resort on Singapore’s Sentosa island.

The company will own and operate all key attractions at the resort, which houses six hotels, a casino, Universal Studios Singapore, The Marine Life Park, the Maritime Experiential Museum and the Equarius Water Park.

Resorts World at Sentosa is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Genting Singapore, a leisure and gaming company listed on the main board of the Singapore Exchange.

Genting Bhd owns a direct stake of 54.4% in Genting Singapore.

AirAsia Announces New Penang-Hong Kong Route

AirAsia on Monday announced a new service from Penang to Hong Kong starting July 31 as part of the budget carrier's plan to establish Penang as its eighth hub.

According to the airline, the service is timely and will be well received by many as it has great advantage due to its extensive route network and low fares.

AirAsia is also increasing its second frequency to Singapore from Penang to cater to the demand from leisure and business travellers.

The new sector to Hong Kong and the introduction of second frequency to Singapore opens for sale for the booking period from July 7 to 12 for the travel period from July 31, 2009, to April 30, 2010.

AirAsia said in a statement today that it will be offering an all-in-fare from RM99 to Hong Kong and RM51 to Singapore to mark the launch of these sectors.

The airline, through its holiday division GoHoliday, is offering guests free rooms upon booking at its partner hotels in Hong Kong.

The promotion is valid via goholiday.airasia.com and available on a first come, first served basis.

"At a time when some airlines are cutting routes and downsizing capacity, we are breaking the trend with our aggressive expansion plans, increasing frequencies where there is proven demand, which certainly is for the Penang-Hong Kong and Penang-Singapore routes," said the airline's regional head of commercial, Kathleen Tan.

"We are also hoping to introduce new sectors to Shenzen and Guangzhou from Penang in the future," she said.

Tan said the Hong Kong route formed part of AirAsia's strategy to establish Kuala Lumpur as a gateway to other Asian destinations.

The airline's relationship with its long-haul affiliate AsiaAsia X will also connect traffic from Australia and the United Kingdom to the Chinese cities, she said.

AirAsia Bhd, the low cost carrier which services an extensive network with 122 routes covering more than 65 destinations, is seeking to serve more major and small cities in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.

Through its corporate philosophy of ''Now Everyone Can Fly'', the leading low cost airline in Asia says it is committed to serve three billion people who are "currently underserved with poor connectivity and high fares".

"We will go anywhere over four-hour destinations for our AirAsia X and below four-hour destinations for AirAsia," said AirAsia chairman Datuk Aziz Bakar in an interview with Bernama.

AirAsia X is the low cost long-haul affiliate carrier of AirAsia that currently flies to destinations in China, Australia and the UK.

The carrier is planning to add two to three new routes before end of this year in China such as Xi'an and Chongqing, and four new routes in India comprising Bangalore, Trivandram, Chennai and Cochin, Aziz said.
He said the airline has applied to fly into South Korea, and is also eyeing other destinations in the Middle East and Australia like Sydney.

"The time is right for us to fully take advantage of the current economic downturn and be prepared when the economy turns around.

"I think many full service airline passengers are turning to non-frill service because they tend to spend less and save more," he said.

Aziz said AirAsia was also promoting its services aggressively to stimulate demand.

"The demand is there and people will fly if they get cheap fares. Passengers only pay the ticket but when they pay for food, we have to make sure it is value for money," he said.

Aziz said AirAsia''s average load factor was about 73 to 75 percent in the last three months, while AirAsia X had been getting very strong load factor.

The London flight's average load factor was between 80 and 83 percent.

Asked on the impact of influenza A (H1N1) virus, he said the airline''s forward booking was not affected very much in the last two months but it was continuing with its aggressive marketing.

"There is H1N1, but if we are to offer 5,000 free tickets to fly to any destinations within Asia, I'm sure it would be fully taken up within three to four hours," he said.

Commenting on the new low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT), Aziz said AirAsia hoped the airport would be completed on time to accommodate its expansion plan.

"We can't just take the delivery of the new aircrafts with no place to park," he said.

AirAsia also hopes the commercial terms are agreed and accepted as soon as possible, he said.

It is understood that the new LCCT will be built by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd and work is expected to start this month, and scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2011.

THE Tourism Ministry expects the upcoming Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival (MMSC) 2009 to do better than last year's event despite fears of the Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak and a gloomy economic environment.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said this is based on the rising number of tourist arrivals and the rise in spending especially on shopping.

"For the first four months of this year, tourist arrivals stood at 7.34 million, an increase of 3.4 per cent compared with 7.1 million in 2008," she said, without giving any sales target for MMSC this year.

Ng said although the virus outbreak has raised concerns among foreign tourists travelling into the country, the numbers are not alarming.

"Based on the statistics we have, we do notice travel cancellations but it is still under control," she said in a media briefing on the MMSC 2009 in Kuala Lumpur.

The 22.5 million tourists who visited Malaysia last year spent about RM48 billion, which is an improvement over 2007 when more than 20 million tourists spent about RM44 billion.

For this year, a positive Tourism Ministry is looking at least 20 million visitors to keep the tourism till ringing.

"Promoting Malaysia as a shopping hub in the region is a serious effort as it generates significant revenue for the country," she said.

Elaborating further on MMSC 2009, Ng said the event that is entering its 10th year, will run for eight weeks from July 4 offering more exciting bargains, discounts, promotions and activities.

It will be launched by the Prime Minister's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor at Pavillion Kuala Lumpur on July 5.

Ng said the country's main target tourists are from the Middle East, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei.

"We expect an influx of the tourists to come from the Middle East as it's a holiday season there at this time of year," she said.

The country is also seeing more tourists from China and India as well as Australia, who previously shopped in Singapore, but now view Malaysia as an attractive place to shop due to better value and a lower exchange rate.

"Many still do not know that Malaysia is a duty free country for various items such as luxury watches," she said, noting that the country is ranked among the top shopping destinations in the region.

MasterCard, the official card for the event, is offering prizes worth a total of RM100,000 to lucky shoppers.

State level launches of MMSC 2009 will take place in Penang (July 8), Kota Baru (July 10), Kota Kinabalu (July 11), Johor Baru and Miri (July 18).

Malaysia Hotel News: Firefly Begin Subang-Singapore Flight Today

Jetstar Asia Thursday launched a daily direct service to Penang, marking its 17th destination from Singapore and the fourth Malaysian city now served through its expanding intra-Asian network.

In a statement here today, Jetstar said with the new route its weekly flights between Singapore and Malaysia would be increased to 88.

Jetstar also operates to Kuala Lumpur three times daily, Kuching daily and Kota Kinabalu four times weekly from Singapore.

From Oct 1, 2009 Jetstar services on the Singapore-Penang route would be expanded to double daily, or 14 times, weekly services, it said.

Malaysia's first community airline, Firefly, Wednesday officially commenced its Singapore-Subang and return flight.

The airline in a statement said the commencement of the thrice-daily flights, signifies its commitment to providing direct access by air to other states in Malaysia.

It said the route, which had three flights daily will have an additional frequency, making it four times daily, effective July 12.

"Our new routes into Singapore further strengthens Firefly's network while focusing on travellers for business and leisure.

"It also completes our promotion of "One Destination, Four Countries"," managing director Eddie Leong said.

He said the carrier was offering an introductory promotional all-inclusive one way fare at RM88.00 nett for the Singapore-Subang flight.

Malaysia Hotel News: Tourism Players Welcome Night Market Proposal For LIMA '09

Langkawi traders and tourism players on Thursday welcomed the suggestion by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen that a night market be held in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2009 (LIMA '09) in December.

Langkawi Tourism Association chairman Shukri Shafie said apart from providing additional attraction to the biennial event, the night market would also benefit local traders.

"Tourists and Lima participants will also be able to visit the market and enjoy cultural performances," he said, adding that the event was one of the ways to showcase Malaysian culture to visitors.

Dr Ng, who made the suggestion at a recent dialogue with tourism industry players here, said that the ministry was prepared to bring in cultural troops from states in Malaysia to perform at the night market.

Chairman of the Langkawi branch of the Kedah Traders and Petty Traders Association, Ghazali Md Noor, also welcomed the suggestion, saying the market could either be sited at the Pekan Rabu complex in Kuah, Pantai Cenang or Padang Mat Sirat.

"This will further enliven the nightly atmosphere throughout the Lima," he said.

The association has over 500 members.

Chairman of the Langkawi branch of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents, Pishol Ishak, said the night market would help increase tourist arrival in future Lima events.

The tourism minister has an art of drawing tourists into the country.

Beginning next year, Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen wants to use the National Art Gallery's works of art as the country's new tourism product.

She said the ministry was currently having discussions with travel agencies to propose 'art tourism' as a new form of luring tourists into the country.

"Art tourism is one of my new (tourism) products and I want to begin by promoting the National Art gallery," she said in her speech at the launch of 'My Collection: Mosaics of Malaysia' here Tuesday.

The exhibition showcases a collection of 100 paintings by Zhang Zhou of Liaoning, China, who is the resident artist of the Modern Arts Gallery owned by Tai Keik Hock in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

For the past seven years, the gallery has showcased the artist's collection which features landscape and Malaysia's cultures as a subject.

The exhibition coincides with the celebration of 35 years of Malaysia-China bilateral relationship which will be held for a month in July.

Later, Dr Ng told reporters that visual art was a hidden treasure which she wanted to develop.

She hoped to get cooperation from the education ministry to develop art education among children, from as early as five years old.

Ng said an artist could also become a millionaire as paintings had become collectible items which could fetch high prices if sold to art lovers worldwide.

Recently, she said, a work by a local artist was sold at US$46,000(RM162,845) at Christie's Auction House in Hong Kong.

Many people have the heart for charity, but with the busyness of life, they do not have the time to plan any community service activities. The Desa ParkCity Community may be no different.

Time Out 4 Charity provides an opportunity for families in Desa ParkCity to be involved in community service by fostering a less fortunate child from a children’s home for the duration of a fun and enjoyable family activity.

Each participating family together with their foster child will take part as an extended family in the activity which will run for about 1.5hrs. The activity will comprise of various tasks that needs to be completed together as a family at different stations set up around The Waterfront. At the end of the activity, there will be a small tea party for all the participants to come together and prizes will be awarded to the top teams for the different stations.

Participation is limited to only 20 families on a “first-come-first-serve” basis. So hurry and register before 21 June 2009 to avoid disappointment!

Artworkshop is on the lookout for the next young Picasso - encouraging and promoting the artistic talents of children living in The Waterfront @ Desa ParkCity with fundraising initiatives.

If you are aged between seven and twelve, you have until 30 June 2009 to enter the Kids Carnival art competition.

To enter, all you have to do is to prepare the topic and medium (eg. drawing, painting, ink, marker, collage and etc) you would like to use to create your artwork on an art paper sized (38 cm x 28 cm) during the two hours competition time located at The Waterfront @ Desa ParkCity.

The Theme is “My Desa ParkCity” - anything at all to do with Desa ParkCity and what it means to you. It may be the lake, the playground, the park, or even an unforgettable event happened at Desa ParkCity, your imagination is the only limit!

Gold Coast resort to be built in Kenyir Lake

KUALA TERENGGANU: STG Group, developer of the Gold Coast Resort projects, will be investing RM50mil in a lake holiday resort at Kenyir Lake.

This is STG’s second project in the East Coast Economic Region (ECER).

The Kenyir Lake Gold Coast Resort covers 233ha and is expected to be completed by March 2010.

The project will start with the construction of 88 bungalows, followed by 188 units of longhouses and a hotel mall.

“The Gold Coast Kenyir development will be unique as it will be made up of a hotel mall with shops, long houses and bungalows built over Kenyir Lake serene waters,” said company group chairman Datuk Dr Alex Tan Siong Seng said in a statement recently.

He is also confident the project will help draw more tourists to Kenyir Lake to enjoy its natural scenic beauty and water sports.

Kenyir Lake is a man-made lake containing some 23.6mil cubic metre of water and covers 369 square km.

Under the ECER’s master plan, the lake has been designated for agro-tourism.

E-ticketing system to curb touting activities

THE illegal ticket touting activities at the Puduraya bus terminal in Kuala Lumpur will hopefully be a thing of the past, if Uda Holdings managing director Datuk Jaafar Abu Hassan manages to initiate and implement the e-ticketing system at the bus terminal.

This is in order to solve the one of the bus terminal’s perennial woes such like touts charging exorbitant rates.

“At the moment I cannot do much about this problem since it comes under the jurisdiction of the CVLB under the Prime Minister’s Department, but what I can do is push for this system to be implemented as soon as possible,’’ he said.

Jaafar said that e-ticketing is a necessary change for Puduraya to succeed as a proper bus terminal.

“This is something that must be done if we want to move forward,’’ he added.

Under the proposal, according to Jaafar, the e-ticketing system works on a two tier basis.

“The first would be interaction between the e-ticketing system and the bus operators,’’ he said, adding that some major bus companies like Transnasional and Mara Liner already have its own e-ticketing system.

“Our system will be linked to the system used by Transnasional or Mara so the public will have direct access to these bus companies,’’ he said.

The second system is where passengers could directly purchase tickets via the internet and even SMS.

“If its computerised than you won’t have third parties like touts coming into the picture,’’ he said.

Jaafar also added that the system would also limit the number of tickets that a person could purchase.

Meanwhile, to tackle the issue of congestion outside the terminal, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall had stationed eight officers outside the premises from 9am to 12am to prevent buses from double parking.

Physical barricades had been put in place to ensure that buses don’t park and wait.

Currently 1,000 buses use the terminal on a daily basis with the number hitting 1,400 during weekends.

Almost 100, 000 people utilise the bus terminal during the weekends.

MALACCA: Tourism Malaysia is finalising plans with their counterparts from Jogjakrata, Indonesia to introduce a special tour package to promote Malacca city, Penang’s George Town and Borobudur.

The World Heritage 3-2-1 Package was a follow-up on the idea mooted by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen during her visit to Indonesia last month, said state Tourism, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Seet Har Cheow.

“It is called the 3-2-1 tour because tourists will be able to visit three Unesco World Heritage Sites in two countries under one package,” he told reporters after meeting 11 delegates from Jogjakarata here last week.

He expressed confidence the new tour package would help attract more tourists to Malacca, Penang and Jogjakrata once tour agents in both countries jointly promote it as a new product.

Head of Jogja Provincial Tourism Authority Tazbir Abdullah said the joint promotion would benefit the two countries.

At present, Borobudur attracts about 2.5mil tourist a year, mainly from Holland, Germany, France and Japan.

“With the package, we will introduce and promote Malacca city and George Town to tourists visiting Borobudur,” he said.

Tourism Malaysia’s international marketing division deputy director Zakaria Mohd Hani said officials from both sides were expected to sign a deal on the joint tour package within the next two months.

He added a familiarization tour would be organised for tour agents and media representatives from both countries prior to the launching.

200 species of insects under one roof

The new attraction offers visitors a glimpse at more than 200 species of insects from all over the world.

Some of the rare insects that can be found in the Insect Zoo are the Orchid Mantis, Dead Leaf Mantis and the Man-Faced Bug.

“I hope our national zoo’s dream to reach international standard by 2015 will become a reality,” said Sulaiman.

The concert was aimed at raising RM50,000 to restore Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman, one of Badan Warisan Malaysia’s heritage sites.

Badan Warisan is the leading national heritage non-governmental organisation (NGO) with a reputation for excellence in heritage conservation services spanning more than 25 years.

PETALING JAYA: Pikom — the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia — wants to create an online version of the Malaysian Mega Sale, the annual nationwide shopping promotion involving hundereds of malls in the country.

The campaign, called Buy Online, will be held during Pikom’s inaugural National ICT (information and communications technology) Month, or NIM in short.

NIM 2009 will run from July 20 to Aug 20.

Pikom hopes that RM100mil worth of goods and services will be sold during this Buy Online campaign and that the sales momentum would continue till year end.

Wei Chuan Beng, organising chairman of NIM 2009, said that while the Malaysian Mega Sale is done in shopping malls, Pikom’s event will involve cyberspace malls.

“While 90% of South Koreans shop online, the number of online shoppers in this country is still small in comparison,” he said.

“But (this means) there is huge potential for e-commerce growth in Malaysia and we hope to drive this growth with our Buy Online campaign. There are many e-merchants that the public can discover through this campaign.”

What’s in store

NIM 2009 will include a three-day leadership summit, a software and services showcase, a PC fair, and an eWaste recycling campaign.

The recycling campaign seeks to educate consumers on the importance of ensuring that their electronic and electrical equipment do not clog dumpsites and poison the Earth.

Pikom’s eWaste campaign will take place in Kuala Lumpur (from July 31 to Aug 2), Penang (Aug 7 to 9) and Ipoh (Aug 14 to 16).

The association will then study the results of this pilot programme, which will help determine the readiness of consumers and logistics infrastructure for a sustainable effort.

Pikom hopes to propose a nationwide implementation of its eWaste programme to the Department of Environment.

Participants at NIM 2009 will also receive Pikom’s inaugural ICT Strategic Review 2009 Report: ICT Landscape in Malaysia.

It will list the top industry spenders for this year, the positive and negative indicators if the ICT sector, trends in the IT job market, growth forecasts, and ICT spending for the year and beyond.

Pikom has spent RM2.5mil on NIM and hopes that the event will help increase ICT interest among Malaysian companies.

It hopes to make NIM an annual event. The event is supported by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry and the Multimedia Development Corporation, the caretaker of the country’s MSC Malaysia initiative.

BEIJING: In a rare reversal, the Chinese government gave in to domestic and international pressure and backed down on Tuesday from a rule that would have required PCs sold in the country to ship with Internet-filtering software.

Just hours before the rule was to have taken effect, the government said it would postpone the requirement for the “Green Dam” software.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said it made the decision partly because some PC markets were having difficulty meeting the deadline. It did not say whether the plan might be revived.

The change of course averted a possible scuffle with Washington. Top US officials had protested the plan after it was imposed abruptly in May, calling it a barrier to trade.

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 200 species of insects from all over the world are set to bug Malaysians at a newly opened attraction in Zoo Negara.

The Insect Zoo – the first of its kind in the country and the biggest in the region – is part of the zoo’s efforts to achieve world-class status by 2015.

Holidaymakers who booked overseas trips a few months ago can postpone them if they do not want to travel now due to the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic, the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) said.
However, they would have to give ample notice to travel agents, Matta president Ngiam Foon said.
The agents should be given reasonable time to negotiate with package tour suppliers such as hoteliers and those involved in transportation.
The negotiation would include waiver of cancellation charges.
“There isn’t any fixed time when the agents need to be informed, it just must be a reasonable time. They should not inform the agents today for a trip scheduled for a day or two later. It should be at least a month prior to the departure date,” he told The Star yesterday.
Ngiam agreed that it would be difficult for travellers to decide on the new date of travel due to the uncertainty about the pandemic.
Even airline companies had allowed rescheduling of flights without charging additional fees, he added.

He said Singapore Airlines had waived rescheduling charges for flights to all affected countries while Eva Airways allowed appeals. United Airlines had waived charges for flights to Mexico.
At the Malaysian Travel and Tourism Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Ngiam noted that the pandemic was a bigger threat to the travel industry compared to the global economic meltdown.
The local tourism industry went down by 40% in the first six months of the year, he said.
Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines senior general manager (network and revenue management) Dr Amin Khan said there was no cancellation of flights to affected countries like Australia and the United States.

Passengers who had booked flights to the affected countries could make changes at no charge until Aug 31, he added.
Airline director of operations Datuk Tajuden Abu Bakar said there were enough cabin crew for flights as only those assigned to the rows of seats involving infected passengers were quarantined for seven days.

An AirAsia spokesman said the airline would allow rescheduling at a cost as there was no travel restrictions by the Government.
This was supported by the World Health Organisation when it had stated that travel restrictions did not stop the spread of disease in previous influenza pandemics, he said.
“Should the guests insist on changing travel plans, they can do so by visiting www.airasia.com and click the option ‘Manage my Booking’ on the first page and proceed to make the necessary changes,” he added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Travel agencies will enjoy special early bird discounts if they book exhibition booths at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Fair 2009 before July 10.

The early birds will get a RM500 discount for every reserved booth while Matta
members will be entitled to RM1,000 off each booth at the fair to be held at the Putra World Trade Centre here from September 4 to 6.
The fair’s organising committee chairman Datuk Mohd Khalid Harun said the discounts were part of the association’s stimulus promotion to spur tourism despite the current challenging times.

More than 800 booths ranging in price from RM3,000 to RM5,000 will be available for bookings from June 29 to July 10.

THE squeals of delight and peals of laughter reverberating through Sungei Wang Plaza took shoppers by surprise recently.
Hello Kitty and Cinnamoroll were making a special appearance at the mall, and about 40 children from the Ti-Ratana Welfare Society, who had been waiting impatiently to meet the affable Kitty and jovial puppy, were ecstatic when the cartoon characters made their entry.
The youngsters cried with delight when they were told they could take individual photographs with the characters and receive the photos as their keepsake.
“I’ve always wished to meet Hello Kitty in person and today I am really happy that my wish is granted. She and her friend Cinnamoroll are so cute and loveable,” said five-year-old Cheong Wai Ling while hugging the big fluffy Hello Kitty toy in her arms.

Besides Cheong, there were another 39 girls aged between three and 16 years who witnessed Hello Kitty’s first appearance in Sungei Wang Plaza, in conjunction with her 35th birthday celebration.
Another excited girl was Jasmine Lam, 15, who has been living in the home run by the Ti-Ratana Welfare Society in Desa Petaling for six years. The teenager could not contain her delight when she met the loveable characters.
“I was so surprised when I heard that my friends and I would be meeting and greeting Hello Kitty. This experience is all the more memorable as we also got to meet Cinnamoroll,” Lam said.
The girls not only got to meet Hello Kitty and Cinnamoroll, they also received goodie bags that contained stationery sets, potato chips, chocolates and other gifts from Sungei Wang Plaza, which had made the visit possible.
“Since it’s the school holiday, we decided to surprise the children by inviting them to Sungei Wang Plaza so that they could meet Hello Kitty and Cinnamoroll,” said Sungei Wang Plaza promotions and public relations senior manager K.K. Lim.

EXTREME sports enthusiasts fought it out in the skate team battle and BMX Flatland Windstorm battle at the Wild Channel Wild in the Street 09 Mines Shopping Fair Indoor competition recently.
Thirty-two skate teams and about 60 BMX Flatland windstorm challengers took part in the two-day competition, which was held in conjunction with the International Go Skateboarding Day 2009.

The event, designed by Wild Channel Street Wear, a brand of fashionable high quality creations for extreme sports participants such as BMX riders and skateboarders, was to provide an avenue for skateboard enthusiasts to show off their skill.
“It was held to take the fight away from the streets and to provide a sort of competition among the skateboarders in the Klang Valley,” said Tropicana Life Sdn Bhd brand manager Fengnee Tung.
The participants showed extreme skills to thrill and entertain the large crowd with performances like front wheel spins, bar spins, flips, rolling on the front and back wheels and freestyle rides on the pedals in the front and back wheels competition which included practice and qualifying rounds.
Tung said there had been good support for the sport, which was recognised by many international Extreme organisations, such as the Asian Extreme Sports Federation, Extreme Sports Associa-tion Malaysia and Singapore BMX Association.

Tung, who is passionately involved in the sports, said it was also her passion to see a Malaysian pro-rider competing in the local and international extreme sports arena and to search for young riders all around the country to be actively involved in the BMX Flatland event.

MAS plans more airfare promotions
Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) plans to launch more airfare promotion campaigns as the national carrier’s load factor has begun to improve on the back of such promotions, said managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Idris Jala.
“With the airline industry facing an economic slowdown and the H1N1 flu affecting the business, we need to do more attractive promotions to boost sales,” he said here yesterday after the launch of the Malaysian Airlines Travel Fair (MATF) and a global low fares campaign.
According to MAS, its load factor in the second quarter rose to 66% as at June 21 from 56% in the first quarter.
“We will continue to push sales aggressively and we are planning to offer more than 70 travel fairs globally until 2010,” he said, adding that the low fare promotions were only for non-peak flights.
Nevertheless, Jala acknowledged that MAS was facing tough operating conditions and that it would be a strong challenge for them to surpass the RM15.5bil revenue posted in 2008.
Meanwhile, MAS chairman Tan Sri Munir Majid said the national carrier currently had no intention to lay off workers.
“We value our workers who have been contributing a lot to this company. We have mentioned it before and today that there will be no lay-offs. We are still at the consultation stage and discussing the best solutions for the company and the staff. We are not in a hurry to decide.”
The company had also not made a decision regarding pay cuts, he added.
The all-inclusive one-way fare promotion under MATF began yesterday and will last until July 5, with prices ranging from RM118 to Singapore, RM198 to Asean countries, RM428 to South Asia, RM488 to Australia and RM898 to Europe.
MAS is also offering promotional deals globally until June 26, with flights to Asean, South Asia, North Asia, Australia, Middle-East, US and South Africa.

How Hotels Use Twitter

The latest must-use social media site is Twitter, and its potential applications for hoteliers are endless.

Facebook remains the king of online social media, but it is the microblogging site known as Twitter that is the undisputed Internet darling of the moment.

As a concept, Twitter is simple: Users are limited to 140 characters per post (an update is known as a “tweet”), and anyone can monitor (or “follow”) anyone else. Most of the major hotel brands now have a presence on Twitter, as do many individual hotels. Some hoteliers even have their own Twitter handles, most prominently Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. CEO Simon Cooper, who tweets as @SimonFCooper.

For hotels and brands, the default use for Twitter seems to be posting links to press releases and special room packages or discount codes. Inevitably, though, hoteliers who take the time to explore the site and interact with others find infinitely more applications for it.

In April, The Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles made waves in the Twitter world by announcing a promotion to give away free room nights to 25 lucky followers of @thebonaventure. The hotel has offered variations of the contest several times since, creating intense buzz for the property each time. Melanie Boyer, the Daly Gray Public Relations account executive who is managing the Bonaventure’s Twitter account, says mainstream media coverage of the contests generated an estimated 20 million consumer impressions for the hotel.

"Twitter is the eye of the ‘it storm’ right now," Boyer says. "We’re looking at the everyday opportunities on Twitter that don’t exist anywhere else. We directly interact with our Twitter followers regularly—we’re developing a personal relationship with our consumer base."

Perhaps no hotelier has had more fun with Twitter than John Gates, general manager of Rancho Bernardo Inn, California. Tweeting under the handle @GMGoneMad, Gates garnered a good bit of publicity with the Twitter-exclusive Survivor Package; for US$19 a night, willing guests would get a room but forgo breakfast, honor bar, heat and air conditioning, pillows, sheets, lights, linens, toiletries, and even the bed. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there were several takers. Other Twitter promotions by the Mad GM include 50% discounts for paying with pounds sterling or half off the golf rate by showing up wearing knickers.

Twitter is viral in a way that few other social media platforms can match. Even if a hotel only has a few hundred Twitter followers, one especially popular tweet could reach tens of thousands of readers in a matter of minutes via a form of forwarding known as “retweeting.”

Twitter has promotional value in an indirect way, as well. Just as many hoteliers have launched blogs that focus not on the hotel but on tangentially relevant topics—things to do nearby the hotel, for instance, or tips for business travelers—the same principle applies with Twitter. Give the consumer relevant information and they will eventually find their way to your hotel.

Mike Taylor, media relations manager for Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and the man behind @fairmonthotels, advises the managers of Twitter accounts for individual hotel properties to position their accounts as the experts for information about their locales. “You become [travelers’] go-to for anything,” Taylor says. “They will come to you and speak to you because they view you as a valued and trusted source for that destination.”

Uses Are Many

While special rate deals, goofy package promotions, news announcements and general brand visibility are the most obvious uses for Twitter, the applications for hoteliers go way beyond. Perhaps most significantly, the site serves as a free, real-time consumer focus group.

Several MGM Mirage properties use Twitter to, among other things, solicit feedback from brand loyalists. Danielle Consiglio, interactive marketing manager for Luxor Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, asked @LuxorLV’s 6,000 followers for input on a poolside text message promotion.

“My team and I came up with ideas, but we are not the customer,” Consiglio says. “So I tweeted, asking, ‘If you were laying by the pool, what kind of offers would you want to receive via SMS?’ The response was great, and we were able to add some offers to our original list that we did not think of.”

Twitter also can serve a more passive focus group function. Type your hotel’s name into search.twitter.com and instantly see what people are saying; even better, the site’s interactivity lets you monitor and maintain your hotel’s online reputation with an ease and visibility unmatched by other social media platforms. Savvy hotel sales and marketing people can keep a real-time eye on the plaudits and criticisms of their competitive set—as well as their own property, of course—giving them a valuable leg up.

Take, for instance, an anecdote about a traveler who tweeted his annoyance at having to wait in the lobby for a few hours while his room was prepared. The hotel down the street, sensing an opportunity to grab some business, proceeded to offer him a room there at a discount, plus free dinner. That hotel not only stole some business in the short-term, but it also created a fan for life.

Using Twitter to promote deals and announce news is fine, but too many hoteliers stop there. Twitter's real value lies in the ability to connect with consumers on a personal level, says Susan Black, a New York-based travel industry social media consultant.

Develop a personable, recognizable voice for your Twitter account and focus on building brand loyalty, picking up one-off business when you can, Black says—and never lose sight of the fact that Twitter is a conversation, not a bullhorn.

"It's not one-way. It's a dialogue," Black says. "Be there to answer the queries. It's well known on Twitter that people follow other people when they know there is a person or a personality behind it."

Fairmont was among the first big brands to jump on Twitter a year ago, and Taylor initially viewed Twitter as a way to interact breezily with members of the media and as another outlet for press releases. As Twitter’s popularity soared, however, @fairmonthotels evolved into a much larger exchange of ideas.

“It’s grown now from more of a media focus to being about guests, brand enthusiasts, partners—we even have other hotel companies that we’re following and are following us,” Taylor says.

Hyatt Hotels & Resorts broke new ground with Twitter back in May when it launched the hotel industry's first Twitter-based virtual concierge. The @HyattConcierge account is staffed around the clock by specially trained agents in the corporate customer service department who are available to assist with typical concierge fare like tee times and dinner reservations. @HyattConcierge also will field assorted guest complaints and queries.

The account—which boasted more than 2,000 followers after less than a month—is not a promotional vehicle, stresses Farley Kern, Hyatt's director of brand public relations. "We wanted to have a presence on Twitter that was about our guests and for our guests and designed around our guests, as opposed to having a presence on Twitter just for the sake of being on Twitter," Kern says.

Is It Monetizable?

For hoteliers still skeptical of Twitter’s staying power, the obvious question—not counting whether Twitter is merely another here-today gone-tomorrow fad—is whether the platform will ever prove monetizable. Aside from the occasional one-off piece of incremental business from highly targeted users, will there ever be a time when hotels see a chunk of bookings coming directly from Twitter?

Maybe, maybe not. But for most tweeting hoteliers, Twitter’s ultimate value is far more abstract and indirect. As John Wallis, Hyatt’s global head of marketing and brand strategy, puts it: “It’s already monetizable if we’re keeping our existing customers happy.”

Creating brand awareness and maintaining guest loyalty are the platform’s most important purposes, says John Wolf, senior director of public relations for Marriott International and keeper of the @MarriottIntl account. “It’s not about return on investment—it’s about return on engagement,” he says.

Likewise, David Godsman, vice president of global Web strategy for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, views the company’s Twitter account, @StarwoodBuzz, as one gigantic customer relationship management tool.

“It’s a very powerful customer service and communication vehicle where our brands and customers can come together to have open and honest conversations,” Godsman says. “It’s less about pushing our hotels and promotions and more about connecting our core brand values with our guests’ daily lives.”
